Show Me Your True Colors
[ This review covers Season One, Episode Eleven of Glee, entitled Hairography, which originally aired on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 ]
Glee continues to surprise me week after week and especially this week, where it was the highlight of my week in a week full of repeat after repeat. One of the things that makes me so excited about Glee is that each week it features different pairings than any we’ve seen before on the show. So let’s take a look at “Hairography.”
Papa Don’t Preach (The Bad)
- Sue Sylvester : OK, so, I missed her last week, I did, but after taking a look at Sue’s motives in this episode, I immediately wanted her to go away. Seriously? She’s still trying to sabotage the glee club? It seems like that’s all she’s done since the series began and so it makes me wonder: what is her character even going to do after sectionals (which, by the way, takes place in just two short weeks)? Hopefully, the sabotaging will stop or at least take a break and we can see more of the other side of Sue that we’ve seen glimpses of so far.
- Terri Schuester : God. I’m sorry, Jessalyn Gilsig, but you somehow manage to ask pick the most annoying characters on television to play. I can’t wait to see what happens when Will finally finds out that Terri really isn’t pregnant. Hopefully it means that Will will leave Terri and finally make a move on Emma. Hopefully. But I’m highly doubting it.
- Lack of Balance : I’m thinking this is one of Glee‘s biggest issue – balance. So many characters just get put on to the backburner, and, as a result, so do their storylines. A lot of shows use this technique but something about it really bothers me when shows do this, which is part of the reason I love Grey’s Anatomy so much: every character manages to get put into each episode in at least some way, even if it just for one line. So although I loved “Hairography,” I would’ve loved to see more balance with the characters.
Crazy in Love (The Good)
- Kurt & Rachel : OK, so, I wasn’t totally a fan of bitchy Kurt, but I liked the whole storyline involving those two. I’ve been waiting for the fact that those two are in love with the same guy to come up for a while and it was kind of nice to see it out in the open in this episode. I think that, in the end, these two will actually become really great friends and I look forward to seeing that.
- Eve : I was actually quite surprised by Eve’s guest turn on Glee. I actually liked her character and she wasn’t a horrible actress, which is, to be honest, what I suspected. Actually, I don’t know why more singers aren’t actors, considering they pretty much do the job in the first place (seriously, have you ever watched a music video or gone to a concert? Artists are master actors). I’m actually hoping to see her back on the show again, which I’m assuming we will at sectionals.
- Puck & Quinn : Quinn is very quickly growing on me. After starting the series as stereotypical bitchy cheerleader girl, she is now one of the show’s best characters because of scenes like the ones in this episode. Yet I wonder, what will happen once the whole baby plot goes south? As for Puck, well, he’s probably Glee‘s best character and I’d like to see him with Quinn more than I want her with Finn, so I was upset that he screwed up and was sexting during the babysitting session. Plus I was really hoping they’d have Puck singing during that scene, but no, no singing for Puck, which made me sad because ever since Mark Salling’s amazing version of “Sweet Caroline,” I’ve been craving more songs from him. Hopefully we’ll get more from him come the back-nine episodes.
Sectionals are quickly approaching and I still can’t decide whether Glee is the kind of show that will have New Directions winning or losing and, to be honest, I can’t decide which direction I want it to go in yet either (although I’m thinking they probably have to win in order to keep the competition tough and the glee club going…right?). We’ve only got two more episodes to go until Glee gets put into a four-month American Idol-induced coma, so let’s savor them!
Next week on Glee: Mattress – When the Glee Club is left out of the yearbook because of budget cuts, everyone seems to be relieved that they won’t have to suffer the ridicule of years past. Everyone except Rachel, that is, who wants her legacy cemented in print. Meanwhile, Quinn makes it her mission to be in the Cheerios yearbook photo, and Will and Terri’s relationship is shaken to its core.
