An Absolutely Perfect Accident
[ This review covers Season Six, Episode Sixteen of Grey's Anatomy, entitled Perfect Little Accident, which originally aired on Thursday, March 4, 2010 ]
Megan’s taking the week off this week and putting the Grey’s Anatomy duties in my hands, so I hope I don’t disappoint! Unfortunately, I’m not near as crafty as Megan and can’t come up with a song to help dictate my review, so, instead we’ll take a different approach: we’ll use quotes from last night’s immensely quotable episode, which happened to feature the most fantastic first ten minutes of any episode this show’s seen.
Your heart lives in your vagina.
Still loving blonde Lexie. And I’m loving the story that they are taking her on at the moment. Should they be dabbling with a reignited pairing of Alex and Lexie instead of throwing Lexie into Jackson’s arms? Uh, no. Not at all. But that’s the path the writers have chosen, and I’m beginning to understand the purpose. Because both Meredith and Cristina are correct – Lexie can’t not have feelings. She can try to be Meredith Three Years Ago, but in the end, she won’t be able to do it, and in the end there’s going to be lots and lots of tears. In one of my absolute favorite scenes of the night, Meredith and Cristina discussing Lexie’s Alex Sex was utterly fantastic and hilarious. I need a screen capture of those two doing the mind-pointy-thing. It’s totally going to be my new phone wallpaper. Seriously.
I’m an awesome best friend.
If there was ever a time to fall in love with Arizona, it was this episode. How could you not absolutely love her when she basically forced Teddy into being her new best friend and inviting her onto Girl’s Night Out? That was my favorite scene of the night, no doubt about it. Speaking of falling in love – if ever there was a time to fall in love with Teddy, it was absolutely this episode. I understand that die-hard Owen/Cristina shippers are having a hard time accepting Teddy – but HELLO, Cristina has already accepted Teddy! And if she has, you certainly can too. Plus, Teddy showed such strength when she turned down Owen’s offer at the end of the episode, instead choosing to follow through with Girl’s Night Out. That alone should have helped make you like her. Because it was a fantastic scene, and showed that maybe, just maybe, there really is hope for Teddy and a story for her beyond Owen and Cristina.
I had to pee in a cup.
I think that everybody was wary of Richard returning to work under Derek. But I really liked how it played out in this episode – everybody was super respectful and played nice, and it didn’t bother me all that much (although I fear that will be squashed come next week’s “Push“). Hopefully this is a sign of Richard beginning to turn around, because I actually didn’t hate him this week the way I have most of the season.
Would you have chosen a different hospital to avoid your mother?
This was such an interesting question for superstar Harper Avery to raise. I feel the man is quite insane, but he brought up a really good point when he asked Meredith this question. I’d never really thought about it before and, honestly, Meredith probably hadn’t either. I wasn’t really a fan of Harper Avery, although the final scene where the doctors got to meet him (and when he agreed to Derek’s chiefly rules) did redeem him a bit. But it was nice to see Jackson get such a prominent storyline in this episode, because he’s really the only Mercy Wester we like, and you know what that means – backstory! I love that of all people, he connected with Meredith. I can see a real bond forming there, and I think it’d be so neat to see those two become good friends.
Why is this my morning?
There was lots of sex in this episode – and none of it was Owen and Cristina related! Oh, the horror! Still, it was utterly humorous to me that Derek kept walking in on all of this sex. His character seems to be the one to crap on as of recently, and it’s a bit sad, but also kind of refreshing. We’re seeing a different, more grown-up side of Derek lately, and I’m liking it. As for Mark, though, he really did divert back to his old self in this episode, and I’m honestly not quite sure how I feel about it. I don’t know what’s next for him, but I really hope it doesn’t involve screwing into submission.
I’ve swung a bat before.
I was really, really scared that we weren’t actually going to see Girl’s Night Out. Because they tend to do that a lot on this show, where they tease something really neat – like a MerDer/CrOwen double date – and then don’t let you see it. So I was scared I wouldn’t get to see it. But we did get to see it! Granted, it wasn’t very long, but I was still really excited and it really was a fun scene. Seeing those women all together, having fun, outside of the hospital… well, it made me wish we could have more of these kinds of scenes.
I couldn’t have been happier with how this episode turned out. The first ten minutes were among the show’s best ever, and the rest of the episode just built upon that. Next week, we get another episode from Season Five Finale writer Debora Cahn, so hopefully she can beat the high bar set for her not only by this episode, but by that finale itself…
My Rating

MARCH 11 on GREY’S ANATOMY
“Push” – A patient who needs an extremely difficult surgery comes to Seattle Grace, and it’s Richard and Owen who vie for the opportunity to tackle it. But the decision lies in the hands of Derek, who deems that Owen should take on the surgery, leaving Richard bitter. Meanwhile, Bailey deals with her own personal struggles when she nervously prepares for another date with Ben.
