Oh, What a Tangled Web

ng7ho1Nancy Botwin just cannot catch a freaking break. I swear to God, everything goes wrong for this woman. Except that, this one time, the one thing that went wrong might just be the thing that went right. It might be the thing that saves her life.

“Weeds” premiered its fifth season tonight. I was incredibly excited for it, because “Weeds” has been a favorite ever since I bought the first season on DVD about four years ago. I bought Showtime just to watch it. I even rewatched the entire fourth season on DVD last week in a day. Actually, quick sidenote: I liked Season Four much better the second time around. Much better.

You see, “Weeds” has come under fire lately. Not for being so controversial and out there, no, people are used to that five years in. No, people are upset because they say the show isn’t as great. I’ve even seen some people call Season Four a “disaster.” Season Four was by no means a disaster. It was simply a show with a set of characters trying to readjust to a totally, completely different way of life.

So, after Season Four’s shocking finale, I waited impatiently for “Weeds” to return for its fifth season. I was not disappointed with tonight’s premiere, not one bit.

As always, the 30 minutes that makes up each episode flew by much too fast for my taste and as a result, I do sit here kind of wondering just what is going to happen next, because I don’t even know if I’ve processed the last episode yet. The episode did a lot more to just expand on setting up what I assume will be Season Five’s major story arcs, such as Shane’s pot dealing, Silas’s new “growforest,” and Nancy’s new baby. The phone calls for Celia were totally classic, although for some reason it seems like such a shame that Quinn has returned to the series as such a bitch. The scene with Shane and Silas’s fight was also brilliant, as was the scene that followed it, with Nancy realizing that no one in her family will speak to her anymore. I read a review somewhere that stated that the writers needed to give Nancy a redemptive arc, and I totally agree with this. I also believe it will happen, but not just yet. Nancy’s not quite done spiraling downwards yet. And I, for one, can’t wait to watch the spiral continue.
